A ban on overtaking for heavy goods vehicles (HGV), has been in force on the A1 motorway between Šentilj and Koper from 6am to 6pm since 15 January 2021.

The ban on overtaking is in effect during the day for goods vehicles whose maximum permissible weight exceeds 7.5 tonnes. It is indicated by the traffic sign “overtaking by goods vehicles prohibited”, with two additional panels that form part of the sign. DARS has placed around 470 traffic signs and additional panels or related signs in order to regulate goods vehicle overtaking throughout the A1 motorway and the Ljubljana Ring Road.

Starting from 1 November 2021, the ban on overtaking for goods vehicles with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes will be in effect throughout the Slovenian motorway and expressway network (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6, H7). As on the A1, the ban will be indicated by the traffic sign “overtaking by goods vehicles prohibited”, with two additional panels that form part of the sign. By 1 November 2021, DARS will place around 750 traffic signs and additional panels, or related signs for this purpose.

We urge goods vehicle drivers to observe the traffic signs, as the motorway police will sanction any illegal overtaking.

Trucks will still be able to overtake during the day on sections where there are three lanes, including the lane for slow vehicles, and at night.

The ban on overtaking for trucks has been agreed between the Ministry of Infrastructure and DARS. Its purpose is to make traffic run more smoothly and to improve safety on the Slovenian motorways and expressways. With this, heavy goods vehicles will no longer be slowing down the traffic flow on the overtaking lane, which is intended for overtaking only.
