On 16 March 2006, the Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia (DARS) sent traffic information to users and the media from the new Traffic Information Centre Slovenia (TIC) for the first time. An agreement was concluded with the then Ministry responsible for transport and the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency (DRSI) for the TIC to collect and provide information on the condition and traffic on all state roads. This is because the motorways and expressways are the responsibility of DARS, while the main and regional roads are the responsibility of the DRSI.
The traffic situation has changed considerably in the last 19 years. In particular, the increase in traffic has led to a significant rise in the number of incidents or obstructions regularly reported by the TIC – there are now five times as many.
In its first year of operation, the Traffic Information Centre Slovenia reported 12,648 incidents, compared to 63,416 in 2024.
Such an increase could not have been managed with the same number of staff without DARS investing in new systems for collecting and distributing traffic information to drivers. In recent years, this has been particularly evident in the deployment of systems for vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and vice versa, known as V2X or Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). Considerable help in testing and implementing them has been provided by the expertise of the operational services, ranging from maintenance services, toll collection services, police and URSZR information centres, to traffic supervisors in control centres, to the media and, above all, the PIC professional team, who collect data from all these services, combine it with data from the devices and distribute it to drivers via a number of tools.
The easiest way to get traffic information for Slovenian state roads is to use the following tools:
- The www.promet.si website, which shows all current road closures, obstacles and congestion on a map, a brief summary of the current situation and forecasts of major traffic changes and road work closures, data for freight traffic, the bora wind and other content. We also publish information from abroad on major events.
- The Promet+ mobile app, which gives you live updates on what is happening ahead while you are on the move. You can download it via the following links: Android Promet+ – Apps on Google Play, IOS Promet+ on the App Store, Huawei AppGallery
- The call centre on 1970 (you can also call 01 518 8 518), where qualified experts can help you with traffic information and advise you on travel decisions.
- The free automated telephone information service on 080 22 44 for quick information on motorway conditions.
- On X (@promet_si) and Facebook (promet.si).
- You can also hear our colleagues every day – live via the media.
Web developers can integrate all the information provided by the TIC into their own websites, either by linking to PROMET.SI or as live source data via the National Access Point for traffic data at www.nap.si.
