Between April 25 and May 5 2026, increased traffic is expected on Slovenian motorways due to public and school holidays across several European countries. Higher traffic volumes and congestions, as well as busier rest areas, are anticipated.
Peak traffic periods:
- 24–25 April (extended weekend; start of holidays in Slovenia and parts of Western Europe);
- 30 April (increased freight traffic ahead of holiday restrictions);
- 3–4 May (end of holidays; intensified return traffic and freight flows).
Main traffic directions:
- Passenger traffic: from Austria and Italy towards Croatia, and from Italy towards Hungary (and vice versa at the end of the holiday period);
- Freight traffic: from Italy towards Hungary (and vice versa).
Expected congestion points:
- Ljubljana ring road and A1 motorway Ljubljana - Koper;
- Border crossings with Croatia and Austria (A2 Obrežje and Karavanke, A4 Gruškovje and Šentilj).
Real-time travel times are available at: www.promet.si.
Drivers are advised to check for possible road closures, particularly on routes to tourist destinations.
Freight traffic restrictions (over 7.5 tonnes):
- Sundays, 27 April (with exceptions), and 1–2 May between 08:00 and 22:00;
- Exception: On 27 April, restrictions do not apply to transport related to operations at the Port of Koper.
Additional notices (May–June holidays in some European countries):
Increased traffic is expected on:
- 14 May (Ascension Day),
- 24 May (Pentecost),
- 4 June and the following weekend (Corpus Christi).
These periods traditionally bring heavy tourist traffic, while regular daily traffic peaks in Slovenia remain high.
