Important sections of motorways and expressways in Slovenia are currently undergoing major renovation. Therefore, DARS, as the infrastructure operator, began modernisation work some time ago. In 2026, these renovations have reached one of their peak phases, which means there are numerous construction sites and lane closures on motorways across Slovenia, causing traffic disruptions and longer travel times.
Drivers travelling to or through Slovenia are advised to plan for longer journeys than usual. They should monitor the traffic situation on Slovenian motorways in real time and plan alternative routes in advance if necessary.
It is also essential to observe all traffic signs near work zones, drive patiently, and always leave a clear lane between traffic columns for emergency vehicles.
During public holidays and the upcoming summer tourist season, drivers are encouraged to avoid travelling on weekends and Mondays whenever possible. The period from Tuesday to Thursday is generally more favourable for travel, particularly in the early morning (before 6:00 a.m.) and late evening hours (after 8:00 p.m.).
Additional notices (May–June holidays in some European countries):
Increased traffic is expected on:
- 14 May (Ascension Day),
- 24 May (Pentecost),
- 4 June and the following weekend (Corpus Christi).
