18 Years - Traffic Information Centre for Public Roads, DARS d.d.

Everyone perceives traffic in his or her own way. There are different types of traffic: road, sea, air, rail... With the development of infrastructure, global society and technology, traffic information has become indispensable.

The PIC published its first daily traffic information on 15 March 2006 on the website www.promet.si and on as many as 45 radio and TV stations. The number of these has since halved due to closures and consolidations, but new technologies such as social networks and the Promet+ mobile app have been added. There were also two lines providing traffic information, 080 22 44 (toll-free) and 00386 1 518 8 518. They were later joined by the short number 1970.

Throughout the years, we have pursued our objectives: professionalism, flexibility and technological progress. But above all, we have not forgotten that the information is intended for the end user – the driver and everyone else who follows our content.

Over the years, we have also been strongly supported by the media, who publish our traffic information daily and ensure that the information system works. We are also increasingly committed to understanding traffic and educating drivers. Our content is used daily by a growing number of online users and by traffic clubs in neighbouring countries.

Information on congestion, traffic accidents, roadworks, restrictions due to the bora wind, passes closed due to snow, closures due to avalanches or other natural disasters can help drivers when planning their route. They can travel more predictably and, above all, good and timely traffic information can save them a lot of time.

Much like new technology, the PIC is constantly being improved. We have upgraded the Promet+ mobile app and the www.promet.si website, and there are also new developments in terms of traffic information technologies in combination with counters. We also aim to present and integrate the internal application system with externally useful views such as cameras and other features. Drivers still like to use traditional media such as radio, phone and web, email, and SMS, but they have also adopted the Promet+ app, Facebook and Twitter/X.

In the first year of operation we had 15,000 visitors, today we have more than 15 million, and the credit for this goes to the professionalism and great efforts of all the staff at the Traffic Information Centre, who are constantly educating themselves, keeping up with new technologies and doing their best for each and every driver who calls the PIC.

This is especially true during emergencies, when the need for fast, reliable and accurate traffic information is greatest.

For example, during the last snowfall in January 2024 alone, our website had over 240,000 visitors in one day, and during the floods in August last year, posts on our Facebook profile had over one million views in one day.

We provide drivers with traffic forecasts, landing pages for individual roadworks on motorways, expressways and other state roads, as well as winter weather warnings, suggestions for the summer tourist season, and we have prepared a traffic calendar, and we are constantly updating the content on our website.

In short, we stay up to date with the various transport systems, because work and demand dictate it and because everyone likes to travel and benefit from fast, first-hand information.

Drivers can also subscribe to the traffic information they want and get updates instantly on every newly entered event on motorways and regional roads, border crossings and passes. We communicate internationally and the list goes on.

The primary mission of the PIC includes clear and understandable information and constant progress in terms of content and technology. And most importantly for the driver, the speed of information. The information is constantly updated, verified and shared with the media and the drivers who are subscribed.

For 18 years we have been working with DARS services (control centres, maintenance, the Main Control Centre and others), the media, the Operations and Communications Centres (113), the Information Centres (112), the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency (maintenance of main, regional and local roads), municipalities and all others, especially regular users and drivers from the field, to develop a system that would deliver the best possible information at any given time.

All this and more is provided by the PIC professional team, with all their competences and skills, embedded in years of development. From the basic information received, to the verification and confirmation of the data, we make it available to the general public on a daily basis, both on our website and radio and TV stations.

Established by the Ministry of Transport, the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency and the Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia (DARS d.d.), the Traffic Information Centre for National Roads (PIC) celebrated its 18th year of successful operation on 15 March 2024.

Thank you for being with us always and everywhere and for being part of us! Have a safe journey!
